Bio-based polymer solutions: Data needed, not just green claims.

Bio-based polymer solutions are gaining attention in packaging, healthcare, consumer goods and products targeting lower carbon footprint. However, in B2B markets, customers increasingly need clear data and certification rather than broad claims about being “green” or “eco-friendly”.

Avient has introduced its Mevopur Healthcare Bio-based Polymer Solutions portfolio, including color/additive masterbatches and ready-to-use compounds formulated with bio-derived materials for polymers such as PP, PE, PC, ABS and styrenic polymers. Avient also highlights product carbon footprint calculation and alignment with ISO 14067.

This shows that bio-based materials are not a simple marketing message. To convince international customers, suppliers need to clarify raw material origin, bio-based content, calculation standards, carbon footprint data, processability and final product performance.

For manufacturers, a bio-based solution only creates value when it fits the end application. If the material is difficult to process, unstable, mechanically insufficient or unsupported by documentation, its communication value will be limited.

This trend creates a new requirement for the masterbatch and compound industry: product development must go together with technical data and clear customer communication.
