BOPE and mono-material packaging: new opportunities for masterbatches in flexible packaging

 

Traditional flexible packaging often uses multilayer structures that combine different materials to achieve protection and processing performance. However, design-for-recycling trends are pushing the market toward mono-material structures, with BOPE film gaining increasing attention.

BOPE is biaxially oriented polyethylene film. Because it can support polyethylene-based packaging structures, BOPE may help packaging enter recycling streams more easily than some multi-material structures. But to achieve the right slip, antiblock, stability, haze, whiteness, printability and processability, masterbatch must be designed for the application.

Ampacet has introduced its BIAX4CE portfolio for BOPE applications, highlighting the role of masterbatch in supporting mono-material packaging and circular economy goals. This shows that when packaging structures change, masterbatch solutions must also evolve.

For packaging manufacturers, a formulation used for PE blown film, BOPP or multilayer film should not be assumed to work the same way in BOPE. Separate testing is needed for coefficient of friction, blocking, sealability, optical properties and line speed.

BOPE is a good example of a broader market shift: materials and additives are increasingly being developed around applications, packaging structures and recyclability requirements from the design stage.
