Compatibilizer masterbatch: a bridge for recycling multi-material packaging

Multilayer packaging helps products achieve multiple functions at the same time: moisture barrier, gas barrier, strength, sealability, gloss, stiffness or product protection. But when it enters the recycling process, this multi-material structure becomes a challenge.

Many polymers are not naturally compatible with each other. During grinding, melting and repelletizing, they may separate into different phases, resulting in recycled materials with poor mechanical properties, poor surface quality or unstable processing. Compatibilizer masterbatch is designed to improve compatibility between polymer phases in recycled blends.

Ampacet has introduced ReVive compatibilizer solutions for recycling mixed or complex packaging waste. The goal is to help recycled materials move into higher-value applications rather than being limited to low-grade uses.

For packaging manufacturers, compatibilizers can be relevant in two cases: recycling internal production scrap and developing packaging with end-of-life recyclability in mind. However, performance must be tested according to film structure, polymer type and final product requirements.

This is an important development because it connects material technology directly with waste reduction, material value recovery and the practical feasibility of packaging recycling.
