ABS has been widely used in many of these applications. However, regulatory pressure and material replacement trends are pushing companies to consider alternatives. A major challenge is that PP has different shrinkage behavior from ABS, making direct replacement difficult with existing molds.
Avient has introduced Gravi-Tech Density Modified Formulations 5200 MS, a PP-based low-shrinkage solution for luxury packaging caps and closures. According to Avient, the material is designed to help customers use existing ABS molds in selected applications.
This is a clear example of the value of compound materials. A compound is not simply resin mixed with additives; it is an engineered material designed to solve a specific manufacturing problem: changing material while reducing risks related to mold, dimensions and final part quality.
For manufacturers, material replacement should consider shrinkage, warpage, mechanical properties, density, decoration, electroplating and total cost, not only resin price.
