Over the last few years, the use of post-consumer recycled plastics (PCR) in packaging has accelerated, especially in markets where recyclable packaging design is becoming a stronger requirement. This creates a new role for masterbatch: it is no longer only about color, but also about improving the stability and usability of recycled materials.
PCR is often less consistent than virgin resin. It may contain color variation, odor, gels, black spots, impurities or lower thermal stability. When used in packaging production, these issues can affect appearance, mechanical performance, printability and processing consistency.
Major material companies are therefore developing masterbatch and additive solutions to support recycled polymers. Avient, for example, has introduced additive solutions for recycled polyolefins that help protect against oxidation and reduce issues such as discoloration, gels and black spots. This reflects a broader shift: masterbatch is becoming part of material performance engineering.
For packaging manufacturers, using PCR should not start only with a target percentage. It should begin with the base polymer, PCR source, dosage, processing conditions, food-contact requirements, desired color and target market standards. A suitable masterbatch formulation can help improve appearance, stabilize processing and reduce production risks.
This trend creates opportunities for suppliers with strong R&D and application testing capabilities. In the future, PCR masterbatch will not be viewed simply as an additive product, but as part of a complete recycled material solution.
