In many applications, especially healthcare, pharmaceutical packaging, specialty packaging and technical components, compliance requirements are strongly influencing material selection. PFAS is a group of chemicals receiving increasing regulatory and environmental attention in many markets.
Avient has introduced several non-PFAS polymer solutions, including a mold release additive for high-temperature polymers and a low-retention additive for pipette tips in healthcare applications. These solutions are designed to support processing and end-use performance without intentionally added PFAS.
The important point is that replacing a chemical group is not simply a matter of changing an ingredient. The material still needs to meet requirements for manufacturability, stability, surface quality, cycle time, mold protection, sterilization or change control.
For manufacturers, non-PFAS additives show how chemical compliance is becoming part of material R&D. If products target the EU, the US or highly regulated industries, questions about additive chemistry, certification and technical documentation should be addressed early.
In the future, material capability will not only be judged by performance, but also by the ability to demonstrate compliance and suitability for the final application.
